Chimes Newsletter – March 5 2014 – PDF File

Not with a Bang, but with a Whisper

The above quote comes from a poem by T.S. Eliot entitled the “Hollow Men”, which is appropriate for all of us “World 3” people. It continues – “this is how the world ends, not with a bang but with a whisper,” which brings me to the topic of the day.

More and more it seems like people are yelling at us. This is especially noticea-ble on cable TV, news channels, radio ads, talk shows and even some religious chan-nels. It’s almost as if all the news anchors, reporters, talking heads, politicians, sports-casters, and preachers have forgotten to be civil to us, the people. No longer are we just people, but we are consumers, fans, right wingers, left wingers, religious nuts, pro choice, pro life, etc. etc. etc., ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

Regardless, the purpose of newsletters is not to do what Lucy does to Charlie Brown, and that is to just point out the problem. It’s also, in my humble opinion, to pro-vide a solution.

Here it is: a cable news channel called the “whisper channel” where everyone, including advertisers, speak in gentle, quiet tones, and never EVER interrupt someone else. The marketing sign for this channel is someone holding up their index finger in front of their mouth with one world “SHHH.”

Instead of world famous actors shouting at us, our news anchors will be regular folks with nice voices who, just to be on the “safe side” will be heavily sedated.

Think about this. You have a horrible, loud, abusive day at work. Traffic has been like Atlanta every day. You get home, which is worth far less than you paid for it, and because you don’t want to be an ignoramus when it comes to world affairs, you turn on the WHISPER CHANNEL and you see a nice looking woman who has real hair, real teeth which are the real color of teeth, real wrinkles, and she doesn’t have all that makeup making her look like the latest thing from a Victoria Secret catalog.

She proceeds to tell you in a soothing manner all about the latest terrorist attack, stock market fiasco, political idiocy, volcanoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, and winter storms (no naming of these storms!!!!!). But, because of the way she says it, you are hunky dory. (By the way, do you know where the term “hunky dory” comes from—well – just to know you are reading this – you need to ask me sometime).

So———–what do you think?

Where civilization slides into the abyss not with a bang, but with a whisper

Oh, by the way, we have a Sunday school class right now led by Lori Carlson and Rhonda Hodge on the book “The Power of a Whisper.”

Another thing about our world – TURN DOWN THE COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!! All except the Audibel commercials – they seem to turn the volume DOWN on those commercials.

P.S. “Be still and know that I am God.” Whispers God.

See you in church. . . . . Jack I promise not to yell.

Dear Lampstand Family,

This is my 3rd week staffing this DTS (Discipleship Training School). God has been doing so much through me and through the school. One thing he’s been teaching me is about strength and knowing when to rely on him and to give him everything.

I am going to Saipan/Guam which is about halfway between Japan and the Philippines. My team is quite amazing. I am leading the team with a girl named Tessa from the Netherlands. We have 6 students and they are Valentine (Swiss), Maddy (AUS), Hannah (Germany), Caleb (USA), Raphaella (USA), and Telia (AUS). I know that God is going to use this team and explore his creation in a new way.

For this country, there is something’s we as a body of Christ can do. This area is well known for teams to have disunity (spirit of) and I’m asking you to pray that this spirit would be silenced.

In order to go on this outreach I will need $2200. If you feel lead please email me and tell me if you can help out in anyway and I will tell you how to get that to me. Anything would greatly be appreci-ated. Prayers are welcome to.

God is so good and amazing and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. I hope you can partner with me either in prayer or financially through this.

Thank you so much for everything you guys are doing and sac-rificing on my behalf.

Rachel Byers
