So Halloween will be upon us in a couple of weeks. It is that time of the year when ghosts and goblins, witches and skeletons, hob-goblins, and ZOM-BIES, devils and demons and other such creatures of the night come out to haunt us. Since we live in the 21st century, and have mastered many technologi-cal breakthroughs, we not only have these ancient creatures of the night, but creatures of the 20th and 21st century also. These include Superman, Batman, the Hulk, Iron Man, Darth Vader, Robots, not to mention Mickey Mouse and his crew.

This Halloween while you greet and entertain the creatures of the night, you might want to ponder the fact that Halloween is a combination of a Pagan and a Christian holiday. Here is the story of Halloween.

Hundreds of years ago back in the times of the druid priests of Great Brit-ain there was a belief that witches, demons, and assorted evil spirits roamed and haunted the earth on the night before November 1st. Being quite terrified of these things, they armed themselves and burned huge bonfires to keep these spir-its away. There were other methods of dealing with these spirits also. One way was to put food out as “treats” to make the night creatures friendlier. The other way they dealt with these witches, and demons, was to dress up as witches and demons themselves and try to “trick” them. I mean really, if you were a witch, you wouldn’t try to hurt another witch, would you?

Well, the Catholic church, being tricky and subtle like the snake, decided to appropriate this pagan holiday by using November 1st as ALL SAINTS’ DAY (or All Hallows Day). This was the day on which all saints who had died were honored. October 31st became ALL HALLOWS EVENING or ALL HAL-LOWS EVEN, which was later distorted to HALLOWEEN.

Since the Catholic church was using this holiday – a young priest by the name of Martin Luther (the father of the Reformation – you know the guy that started all of these Protestant – protester – churches) decided that on October 31st 1517 he would nail his 95 Theses to the door at Wittenburg which started the Protestant Reformation.

So you see, there is a little more to Halloween than meets the eye. As they come to your door on October 31st remember that they may not all be demons, devils, and ZOMBIES, but that some of them may be saints and sinners as well.

In honor of all this stuff, and since our society and entertainment is having a love affair with ZOMBIES

these days, what with “The Walking Dead” on TV and the World War ZZZZZZZ!, and Warm

Bodies, and Zombie Land at the movies, I will bringing to you a message of GREAT IMPORTANCE ON
